Bergwirtschaft Hohmatt

A 22-seat kitchen run by Eleni & Yassine, serving the dishes their grandmothers argued about on Tuesday nights in Kreuzberg.

01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Magglingen, Bergwirtschaft Hohmatt offers a charming blend of authentic Swiss dining and invigorating hiking experiences. This delightful spot is much more than just a restaurant—it's a welcoming haven for nature lovers and food enthusiasts alike.

The culinary offerings here focus on traditional Swiss fare that feels both comforting and hearty, perfect after a day spent exploring the surrounding trails. Diners rave about the classic vegetable Rösti, a crispy and flavorful potato dish that captures the rustic essence of Swiss cooking. Another standout is the tasty Cordon Bleu, which Mike H fondly recommends as a savory reward following a scenic hike. The menu offers a fine variety from Swiss typical specialties to fresh salads and fried fish, pleasing both local palates and adventurous visitors.

Stepping inside, the atmosphere at Bergwirtschaft Hohmatt is refreshingly casual yet thoughtfully inviting. As Patrizia Hongisto notes, the friendly service and attention to detail—like fresh roses adorning the tables—enhance the dining experience, making it especially welcoming for groups. While the kitchen may occasionally take its time, the relaxed pace allows guests to soak in the calming surroundings and warm hospitality. The large, airy room offers a cozy retreat from the mist and fog that often cloak the region, as Costa R. Zbinden highlights, providing a peaceful escape with stunning views.

Outside, the hiking paths winding through the magnificent countryside beckon visitors to immerse themselves in the serene Swiss outdoors. Mike H’s suggestion to combine a vigorous walk with a leisurely meal encapsulates the true spirit of Bergwirtschaft Hohmatt—a perfect retreat for rest and rejuvenation amid nature’s beauty.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker looking for a savory pause or a traveler seeking authentic Swiss flavors in a tranquil setting, Bergwirtschaft Hohmatt promises an unforgettable experience. It’s a place where the simplicity of traditional dishes meets the grandeur of the natural landscape, creating moments that linger long after the last bite.

The service was friendly and took good care of our big group. There were very nice roses on the tables and the table decorations were very appreciated. Also they were able to flexibility adjust for those in the group that had to leave earlier. The kitchen was slow so the others had a long wait. The food was basic, rather simple but enjoyable. The room was nice and the environment outside very pleasant. Thank you.

Exzellent country side, a place to rest but not cheap. However, go for a good walk in this most wonderful scenery and get some recreation. Then have a quick stop and try the tasty Cordon-Bleu

The best brunch in Switzerland. Fresh made bread, butterly gipfeli, crispy Rösti, very good selection of cheese & dried meat, it was so good that I already dream about it
